iPhone and iPod touch: "Cannot send" email message alerts

IPHONE AND IPOD TOUCH: "CANNOT SEND" EMAIL MESSAGE ALERTS

* Last Modified on: January 25, 2008

Issue Or Symptom

Manually moving or transferring mail messages into your Outbox for your email account on your iPhone or iPod touch and trying to send can result in erroneous "cannot send" alert messages to appear on the device.

For example, if you transfer a message that was sent to you from "John Smith" to your email account's Outbox, Mail will notice that there's a message in the Outbox, but it won't know what email account the message originated from. This can result in random "Cannot send" email alerts to appear repeatedly on the device.

Products Affected

* iPhone
* iPod touch (with January Software Upgrade)

Solution

Email messages that were manually transferred to the Outbox will no longer be present once the iPhone is in the state of reporting erroneous "cannot send" error alert messages.

A workaround to this is to force the Mail application to display those messages in the Outbox by placing the device in Airplane Mode for iPhone (or turn Wi-Fi OFF for iPod touch), and then try to send a message in Mail. This will force the mail message(s) to re-appear in the Outbox where you can then delete the message(s). Note that if you have multiple email accounts on your device, you may need to check each account for the Outbox.

Updating to iPhone software 1.1.3 or later reduces the likelihood of this occurring in the first place.
