IPHONE AND IPOD TOUCH: HOW TO CHECK WEB-BASED EMAIL ACCOUNTS SUCH AS WINDOWS LIVE HOTMAIL
* Last Modified on: February 08, 2008
* Article: 306663
Using Mail on the iPhone or iPod touch requires an account that supports POP3 or IMAP mail. But if your email doesn't have IMAP or POP3 support, like Hotmail or MSN mail, you can still check your email using Safari. Follow these steps to check your mail with Safari:
* Press the Home button and tap Safari.
* Tap the address field at the top of the screen, type the web address (www.hotmail.com or www.msn.com for example) and tap Go. If you don't see the address field, tap the status bar at the top of the screen.
* If necessary, navigate to the login screen and then bookmark your webpage so that you can quickly return to your Hotmail or MSN email account at any time without having to retype the web address.
You can also sync your Hotmail or MSN bookmark from your computer if you use Safari on the Mac, Safari for Windows, or Internet Explorer on PC.

iTunes displays -50 error message when syncing iPod on Windows XP
ITUNES DISPLAYS -50 ERROR MESSAGE WHEN SYNCING IPOD ON WINDOWS XP
* Last Modified on: February 01, 2008
* Article: 304996
Symptom
When trying to sync iPod, change iPod settings, or restore iPod from within iTunes you may see one of the following error messages:
* "The iPod "Customer's iPod" cannot be updated. An unknown error occurred (-50)"
* "The disk could not be read from or written to"
* "The iPod "Customer's iPod" could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (1418)
* "The required disk could not be found"
Products Affected
* iPod (all models)
* iTunes 7.x (Windows XP)
Solution 1
This symptom may be caused by an issue with the digital signing of Windows XP drivers. Following the steps below to reregister several .dll files mentioned below may resolve this issue. Before proceeding however, try to restore the iPod using the latest version of iTunes.. If you are unable to restore it or the symptom reappears, then follow the steps below:
* Disconnect the iPod from the computer and close iTunes.
* Highlight ALL of the following 10 lines of text that begin with regsvr32 and then choose COPY from the EDIT menu of your web browser:
regsvr32 /s softpub.dll
regsvr32 /s wintrust.dll
regsvr32 /s dssenh.dll
regsvr32 /s rsaenh.dll
regsvr32 /s gpkcsp.dll
regsvr32 /s sccbase.dll
regsvr32 /s slbcsp.dll
regsvr32 /s mssip32.dll
regsvr32 /s cryptdlg.dll
regsvr32 /s initpki.dll
* Open the NOTEPAD program by navigating to:
Start > All Programs > Accessories > Notepad* In Notepad, choose PASTE from the EDIT menu. NOTE: make sure that the text that appears in Notepad is the same as what is shown above.
* From the FILE menu, choose SAVE AS.
* In the FILE NAME: field type appleipod.bat and save the file to the Desktop.
* Close Notepad and locate the appleipod.bat file. It should appear on the Desktop with the icon shown below:
* Double-click the file and you will see a black window appear on the screen for about a minute. Wait until the window automatically disappears and proceed to the next step.
* The appleipod.bat file can be deleted at this time.
* Open iTunes and connect the iPod.
* When the iPod appears in iTunes, restore the iPod and resync your content.
Note: Because some malware may unregister the .dll files, make sure you have the most recent updates to your anti-virus software and then do a full scan of your files.
Solution 2
This symptom may also be caused by software applications which change the appearance of Windows XP. Try deleting or removing any third-party Windows OS skins, Windows themes, or desktop mods that are installed to resolve the iTunes Error -50 issue when syncing your iPod to Windows XP.

* Last Modified on: February 06, 2008
* Article: 307426
Issue Or Symptom
If you have iTunes 7.5 and sync your Gmail POP settings to your iPhone or iPod touch with software version 1.1.3, updating to iTunes 7.6 may result in not being able to check mail on your Gmail account because the POP account settings were not changed to IMAP. You may see the following error message: "Cannot Get Mail
The connection to the server "imap.gmail.com" failed"
Products Affected
* iPhone

iPhone and iPod touch: Setting up VPN
IPHONE AND IPOD TOUCH: SETTING UP VPN
* Last Modified on: February 07, 2008
* Article: 305827
VPNs (virtual private networks) are often used within organizations to allow you to communicate private information securely over a non-private network. You may need to configure VPN, for example, to access your work email on iPhone or iPod touch.*
iPhone or iPod touch* can connect to VPNs that use the L2TP or PPTP protocol. VPN works over both Wi-Fi and EDGE network connections.
CONFIGURE VPN
Choose General > Network > VPN and tap Settings. Ask your network administrator which settings to use. In most cases, if you've set up VPN on your computer, you can use the same VPN settings for iPhone or iPod touch.*
TURN VPN ON OR OFF
Once you've entered VPN settings, a VPN switch appears at the top level of the Settings list.
Tap Settings and turn VPN on or off.

Unable to use Wi-Fi with iPhone or iPod touch because there's no Wi-Fi address listed for the device
UNABLE TO USE WI-FI WITH IPHONE OR IPOD TOUCH BECAUSE THERE\'S NO WI-FI ADDRESS LISTED FOR THE DEVICE
* Last Modified on: February 06, 2008
* Article: 306067
Symptom
* iPhone or iPod touch appear to be connected to a Wi-Fi network but cannot use Wi-Fi for checking email, surfing the Internet, or other data transactions.
AND
* On the device, when you tap Settings > Wi-Fi and then tap
next to the network, no values or entries for IP Address, Subnet Mask, Router, or DNS appear.
AND
* The device shows no Wi-Fi address (Tap Settings > General > About and scroll down to Wi-Fi Address).
This can happen if, during the initial setup of the iPhone or iPod touch, no Wi-Fi address was registered. So while the device can attach to different Wi-Fi networks, it will not be able to retrieve an IP address because the Wi-Fi router doesn't see a Wi-Fi address from the device.
Products Affected
* iPhone
* iPod touch
Solution
First, sync your iPhone or iPod touch to iTunes in order to backup your user info, Contacts, Calendar, and other data. Then, try the following steps in order.
Step One
On the device, tap Settings > General > Reset > Erase All Content and Settings. Check to see if the device now displays the Wi-Fi address (tap Settings > General > About and scroll down to Wi-Fi Address). If there is a Wi-Fi Address, then you're done with these steps and can resync your settings and your media using iTunes.
If there's still no Wi-Fi Address, then continue to Step Two.
Step Two
* Restore the iPhone or iPod touch software (this erases all data on the device) using iTunes (see KB article #305744" for additional assistance).
* After the restore is complete, sync your previous settings (mail settings, text messages, notes, call history, contact favorites, etc.).
* Now verify if your device shows a Wi-Fi address (tap Settings > General > About and scroll down to Wi-Fi Address).
If there is a Wi-Fi address, then you're done with these steps. If there is no Wi-Fi address, then continue to Step Three.
Step Three
If there is no Wi-Fi address listed after doing the above steps, then your iPhone or iPod touch may need to be repaired. Take your device to an Apple retail store near you or contact Apple technical support. See the iPhone Service FAQ for additional service information.

iPhone and iPod touch: About the purging feature for cached email
IPHONE AND IPOD TOUCH: ABOUT THE PURGING FEATURE FOR CACHED EMAIL
* Last Modified on: January 31, 2008
* Article: 306045
iPhone and iPod touch have the ability to purge cached emails via Settings > Mail > Show Recent Messages. Note that this only affects the local copies of messages on iPhone and iPod touch and does not affect messages on the server. For additional details, see below.
When storing POP or IMAP email messages on your iPhone or iPod touch (i.e. emails stored in Sent, Drafts, and Trash folders), the purge feature for your IMAP and POP email accounts will start purging email messages on the device (throwing out the oldest cached email messages) once the limit has been reached for those folders.
The purge setting can be adjusted in the Settings > Mail under Messages: Show Recent Messages settings. Current allowed values for Show Recent Messages can be set to 25, 50, 75, 100, and 200 Recent Messages. The number of emails displayed in your Inbox also applies to the purge feature and affects all POP and IMAP email accounts configured on the device.
For example, if the Mail settings are configured to "Show 25 Recent Messages", the Sent, Drafts, and Trash folders for all of the POP and IMAP email accounts will start purging the oldest cached email messages in those folders when they go over 25 messages. NOTES
* The default setting on iPhone or iPod touch for POP accounts is to keep mail on the server. If you have changed the default setting on the iPhone then the mail will only be stored on your iPhone.
* If you have the "Remove Deleted Messages" option set to Never, the purge feature will still remove messages from the device based on the Show Recent Messages setting described above, but the messages are still available on the server.

When an Outlook account is configured for cached Exchange mode, Microsoft Outlook works with a local stored copy of your user data from Exchange Server. By configuring Microsoft Outlook to cached Exchange mode, your iPhone or iPod touch will sync all of your Microsoft Outlook contacts to the device. IMPORTANT: Information about products not manufactured by Apple is provided for information purposes only, and does not constitute Apple's recommendation or endorsement. iPhone and iPod touch: "Cannot send" email message alerts
IPHONE AND IPOD TOUCH: "CANNOT SEND" EMAIL MESSAGE ALERTS
* Last Modified on: January 25, 2008
* Article: 307371
Issue Or Symptom
Manually moving or transferring mail messages into your Outbox for your email account on your iPhone or iPod touch and trying to send can result in erroneous "cannot send" alert messages to appear on the device.
For example, if you transfer a message that was sent to you from "John Smith" to your email account's Outbox, Mail will notice that there's a message in the Outbox, but it won't know what email account the message originated from. This can result in random "Cannot send" email alerts to appear repeatedly on the device.
Products Affected
* iPhone
* iPod touch (with January Software Upgrade)
Solution
Email messages that were manually transferred to the Outbox will no longer be present once the iPhone is in the state of reporting erroneous "cannot send" error alert messages.
A workaround to this is to force the Mail application to display those messages in the Outbox by placing the device in Airplane Mode for iPhone (or turn Wi-Fi OFF for iPod touch), and then try to send a message in Mail. This will force the mail message(s) to re-appear in the Outbox where you can then delete the message(s). Note that if you have multiple email accounts on your device, you may need to check each account for the Outbox.
Updating to iPhone software 1.1.3 or later reduces the likelihood of this occurring in the first place.
This document will be updated as more information becomes available. KEYWORDS: ktech kiphone kipodtouch Did this article help you?

iPhone and iPod touch: Supported protocols for VPN
IPHONE AND IPOD TOUCH: SUPPORTED PROTOCOLS FOR VPN
* Last Modified on: January 24, 2008
* Article: 305723
This article covers the basics about the VPN protocols that iPhone and iPod touch support*. For making sure VPN is properly configured to work with iPhone or iPod touch, you should contact your network administrator or IT Department. You also might want to refer them to this article.
For VPN user authentication, iPhone and iPod touch support RSA SecureID and CRYPTOCard for 2-factor token authentication, and password based MS-CHAP version 2. For machine authentication, iPhone and iPod touch support Shared Secret.
Examples
If you are successfully using VPN in Mac OS X with a L2TP/IPSec configuration and you are using Password, RSA SecurID, or CRYPTOCard User Authentication methods, and Shared Secret key for Machine Authentication, then the same VPN configuration should work on iPhone or iPod touch. In addition, if you are using a Shared Secret key for Machine Authentication, it should work as well. The other User Authentication / Machine Authentication methods are not supported by iPhone or iPod touch.
Or, if you are successfully using VPN in Mac OS X with a PPTP configuration and you are using the Password or RSA SecurID User Authentication method, then the same VPN configuration should work on iPhone. The other User Authentication methods are not supported by iPhone or iPod touch.
If you have questions about what your VPN settings are or what your Shared Secret key is, you should contact your network administrator or IT Department.
For information on how to set up and use VPN, see the iPhone User's Guide:

iPhone and iPod touch email settings for common Internet Service Providers (ISPs) in the United Kingdom
IPHONE AND IPOD TOUCH EMAIL SETTINGS FOR COMMON INTERNET SERVICE PROVIDERS (ISPS) IN THE UNITED KINGDOM
* Last Modified on: January 23, 2008
* Article: 306986
This page offers information on how to set up your iPhone or iPod touch to access email from common Internet Service Providers (ISPs) in the United Kingdom. As ISPs provide Apple links to these settings, the table below will be updated. If your ISP is not listed, please refer to their website or contact them directly for information regarding your email settings.
Important:Please locate POP and SMTP server information from the links in the table below to enter into your iPhone or iPod touch. Please note, some links may not contain steps specific to iPhone or iPod touch. For iPhone customers only: To ensure your settings can be used on any network, you will want to first turn Wi-Fi off, if on, by choosing Settings > Wi-Fi and sliding it to Off, after the account has been set up you should turn Wi-Fi back on.
For iPhone customers only: Every ISP email account has to go through O2's Outgoing Mail Server "smtp.o2.co.uk" for sending mail. This will work for both Wi-Fi and EDGE connections. The Outgoing Mail Server needs to be configured with your O2 username and password. If you are a new customer, you received your O2 username and password for your account when you setup your O2 portal ID during the activation process. If you are an existing O2 customer, you should already have your O2 username and password information.
Example
Email address: [emailusername]@ispname.net
Password: [ISP-password]
Incoming Server: pop.ispname.net
Outgoing Server: smtp.o2.co.uk
Username: [o2username]@o2.co.uk
Password: [o2-password]

iTunes for Windows Vista: Distorted photos on device after syncing or blue screen error message on computer
ITUNES FOR WINDOWS VISTA: DISTORTED PHOTOS ON DEVICE AFTER SYNCING OR BLUE SCREEN ERROR MESSAGE ON COMPUTER
* Last Modified on: January 18, 2008
* Article: 306525
Issue
Windows Vista computers using Serial ATA (SATA) HD controllers may experience unexpected behavior when copying images to iPhone, iPod, or Apple TV. Some images synced from Windows Vista may have color banding or appear visually distorted. You may also see one of the following messages when syncing the image:
* "iTunes cannot copy the photo [photo name] because it cannot be displayed on the iPod."
* "The photos you are syncing cannot be encrypted."
* "Photos are not in an iPhone compatible format."
Additionally, iTunes may unexpectedly quit or become unresponsive or the computer may unexpectedly restart or show a blue screen error.
Products Affected
* All iPod models with a color display
* iPhone
* Apple TV
* iTunes 7.4.x and 7.5
* Windows Vista Home Premium 32-bit using an SATA HD controller
* Windows Vista Ultimate 32-bit using an SATA HD controller
Solution
Update to iTunes 7.6 or later (which will include the latest version of QuickTime).
If the issue continues after updating QuickTime, check to make sure you have the most recent drivers for your computer and the SATA HD controller. See this document for more information on updating drivers.
If the issue continues after updating drivers, disable ReadyBoost.
* Right-click the flash disk ReadyBoost is using and choose Properties from the shortcut menu.
* Click the ReadyBoost tab.
* Select "Do not use this device" and click OK.
If the above steps do not resolve the issue, a workaround you can use is to move the photos to a non-SATA HD and sync the images from that drive.
This document will be updated as more information becomes available.

64-bit editions of Windows Vista require iTunes 7.6 or later
64-BIT EDITIONS OF WINDOWS VISTA REQUIRE ITUNES 7.6 OR LATER
* Last Modified on: January 17, 2008
* Article: 301301
Windows Vista
iTunes 7.6 or later is supported with any 64-bit edition of Windows Vista. If you are using 7.5 or earlier, some features may or may not work correctly.
Follow these steps if you're not sure what version of Windows you have.
You can find this by choosing Start > Control Panels > System. Look for an identifier in the window that appears that says "system type"; if the value says "64 bit edition," make sure you're using iTunes 7.6 or later.
Note: The installer for 64-bit Vista is named iTunes64Setup.exe instead of iTunesSetup.exe. If you download the iTunes installer from iTunes.com using Vista 64 and the file is iTunesSetup.exe, your browser is likely not correctly identifying the OS as being Vista 64. Try downloading iTunes again using a different browser, like Internet Explorer.
Windows XP
iTunes is currently not supported in Windows XP Professional x64 Edition. Features may or may not work correctly. One example is reading or writing to an optical drive (CD-ROM, CD-RW, DVD-ROM, DVD-RW). It's also possible iTunes for Windows may not successfully install.
Follow these steps if you're not sure what version of Windows you have.
Open "My Computer" and choose About Windows from the Help menu. Look for an identifier that indicates "x64 edition" in the window that appears.
Windows 2000
See this document for information on what iTunes version is supported with Windows 2000.
This document will be updated when more information is available.
