IPHONE AND IPOD TOUCH: ABOUT THE PURGING FEATURE FOR CACHED EMAIL

iPhone and iPod touch have the ability to purge cached emails via Settings > Mail > Show Recent Messages. Note that this only affects the local copies of messages on iPhone and iPod touch and does not affect messages on the server. For additional details, see below.

When storing POP or IMAP email messages on your iPhone or iPod touch (i.e. emails stored in Sent, Drafts, and Trash folders), the purge feature for your IMAP and POP email accounts will start purging email messages on the device (throwing out the oldest cached email messages) once the limit has been reached for those folders.

The purge setting can be adjusted in the Settings > Mail under Messages: Show Recent Messages settings. Current allowed values for Show Recent Messages can be set to 25, 50, 75, 100, and 200 Recent Messages. The number of emails displayed in your Inbox also applies to the purge feature and affects all POP and IMAP email accounts configured on the device.

For example, if the Mail settings are configured to "Show 25 Recent Messages", the Sent, Drafts, and Trash folders for all of the POP and IMAP email accounts will start purging the oldest cached email messages in those folders when they go over 25 messages. NOTES

* The default setting on iPhone or iPod touch for POP accounts is to keep mail on the server. If you have changed the default setting on the iPhone then the mail will only be stored on your iPhone.
* If you have the "Remove Deleted Messages" option set to Never, the purge feature will still remove messages from the device based on the Show Recent Messages setting described above, but the messages are still available on the server.
