IPHONE AND IPOD TOUCH: IF SEND MAIL DOES NOT WORK

Email on iPhone and iPod touch works with most industry standard IMAP and POP3 email systems, and includes preset email configurations for many of the most popular email services such as Yahoo!, Gmail, .Mac, and AOL. In most cases sending email just works. However, if you are having an issue sending email see the suggestions below. For best results, make sure you are using the most recent iPhone and iPod touch Software. See this document for information on how to check for software updates.
You can also learn what settings you need to enter on iPhone and iPod touch for many popular email accounts using the Mail Setup Assistant.
CHECK SETTINGS
Go into Settings > Mail and verify each of the settings you have entered for your email account. Note that some ISP's settings for a computer only work when connected to that ISP's network. Check with your ISP to see if there is an alternate method for sending mail when you are not on their network. If there's not an alternate method, see the section below for a way to configure your email account to send mail when on the EDGE network.
RE-CREATE YOUR MAIL ACCOUNT ON IPHONE AND IPOD TOUCH
If you opted to sync selected mail account settings through iTunes and are unable to send mail, try deselecting this sync option following the steps below:
* Connect iPhone or iPod touch to the computer and open iTunes.
* Select iPhone or iPod touch in the source list and select the Info tab in the main window.
* Deselect the "Sync selected mail accounts" option.
* Click SYNC in the lower right corner of iTunes.
* After the sync completes, eject iPhone or iPod touch from iTunes and disconnect it.
Next, setup your mail account directly on iPhone or iPod touch. This allows iPhone or iPod touch the opportunity to automatically verify your account settings. In many cases, the settings needed for iPhone or iPod touch to send mail when you are away from your home network will differ from those on your home computer.
If you see an error message when saving the settings, check to make sure you entered ALL of the account information correctly and that it matches the information provided by your ISP for connecting to their mail servers from outside of their network.
CONFIGURE IPHONE MAIL FOR EDGE
To see if your iPhone settings work with EDGE, temporarily turn off Wi-Fi by choosing SETTINGS > WI-FI before setting up your mail directly on iPhone. Once you've turned Wi-Fi off, follow the steps below to setup your mail account on iPhone.
* On iPhone, choose SETTINGS > MAIL.
* In the Accounts section, choose ADD ACCOUNT > OTHER
* Enter ALL of the account information including both required and optional information and click SAVE. NOTE: Be sure to carefully type your password correctly as you will not be able to see the letters you are typing in the password field.
* iPhone will verify your account settings.
If the verification worked, then your account should work on and off of your ISP network and you can re-enable Wi-Fi.
O2 Subscribers
See this document for a note on using O2's Outgoing Mail Server.
AT&T Subscribers
If you are an AT&T subscriber and your ISP does not allow you to connect to their outgoing mail server to send email from outside their network, you can use the following AT&T outgoing mail server instead.
* cwmx.com. No user name or password required
AT&T's outgoing mail server will only allow you to send mail while using an EDGE connection and will not work on a Wi-Fi connection. If you are connected to Wi-Fi and would like to send mail using AT&T's server, turn off Wi-Fi by choosing SETTINGS > WI-FI. Information about using AT&T's mail server to send mail using EDGE can be located in AT&T's support document 72769.
USING YAHOO! MAIL, GMAIL OR AOL MAIL
If you need to use email on both Wi-Fi and EDGE and your ISP does not allow you to connect to their mail servers from outside their network consider creating a free Yahoo! Mail, Gmail, or AOL Mail account. You'll be able to setup these accounts easily on iPhone and you can forward email from your ISP email account to your new account. To setup a free Yahoo! Mail, Gmail, or AOL Mail account visit the sites below:
* mail.yahoo.com
* mail.google.com
* mail.aol.com
For information about forwarding email from your current ISP email account, please consult your ISP's support documentation.
